NetWeaver BPM: NullPointerException During Deployment

Symptom
You are deploying a Process DC to the SAP NetWeaver BPM Process Server. The deployment fails with a NullPointerException. In the defaultTrace or the deployment error message you will find an exception stack trace comparable to the following one:
